Roadmap for the Decarbonization of the Plastics Industry — A New Era for the Sector

Decarbonization is a priority across all sectors of the economy — and the plastics industry is no exception. To address the climate challenge and align with carbon neutrality goals by 2050, the Portuguese Plastics Industry Association (APIP), in collaboration with EY Parthenon, developed the Roadmap for the Decarbonization of the Plastics Industry.

This initiative is aligned with the objectives of the PNEC 2030 (National Energy and Climate Plan) and the RNC 2050 (Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality), and outlines a strategic plan based on four key pillars:

1️⃣ Demand Management

Encouraging more efficient use of plastics through reuse, recycling, and eco-design, reducing the need for virgin raw materials.

2️⃣ Energy Efficiency

As a highly energy-intensive sector, optimizing production processes and transitioning to renewable energy sources is critical to reducing emissions.

3️⃣ Decarbonizing Production Processes

Investing in low-carbon technologies, electrification, automation, and alternative fuels to modernize operations and reduce environmental impact.

4️⃣ Decarbonizing Raw Materials

Substituting fossil-based raw materials with biopolymers, recycled plastics, and other low-carbon alternatives.

🚀 Ongoing Actions

To support this transition, APIP is organizing workshops, webinars, and developing digital tools and practical guides to help companies — especially SMEs — adopt sustainable and innovative practices.

Collaboration across the business and innovation ecosystem is crucial for the plan’s success. Through collective action, the sector can significantly cut its emissions, boost competitiveness, and create new green jobs.
