Roadmap for Decarbonizing the Construction Industry
The Roadmap for Decarbonizing the Construction Industry, led by the Portuguese Technological Construction Platform (PTPC), aims to transition towards a Net Zero model in civil construction and associated industrial sectors by 2050. This roadmap, known as C2Ø (Construction to Zero), represents a collective effort encompassing material and energy flows in construction, as well as existing and new buildings. The primary goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by promoting more sustainable construction practices and integrating digitalization and technological innovation.
PTPC works to improve energy and material efficiency across the involved industries while fostering the adoption of low-carbon products. Furthermore, the project aligns with national climate strategies such as PNEC 2030 and RNC 2050, complementing other sector-specific initiatives like the Construction to Zero roadmap for the cement industry.
Key Practical Actions
The Roadmap emphasizes the adoption of greener technologies and the empowerment of companies in the sector to implement decarbonization solutions, while supporting the development of energy-efficient products and materials with lower environmental impacts.
Among its various initiatives, the project features:
- Detailed analysis of GHG emissions from the construction sector, with strategies tailored to the industry’s specific characteristics.
- Integration of technological solutions that not only aim to reduce emissions but also improve energy efficiency, promote circular economy practices, and encourage the use of sustainable materials.
The C2Ø Roadmap addresses several critical areas:
- Innovative Technologies: The platform advocates for adopting new technologies that support decarbonization, including low-carbon materials and renewable energy sources.
- Energy and Material Efficiency: The project emphasizes improving construction processes to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints throughout the building lifecycle.
- Capacity Building for Companies: PTPC engages construction companies through workshops and training activities to raise awareness of decarbonization and provide the tools necessary to implement changes effectively.
- Integration with National Policies: The C2Ø initiative aligns with climate transition policies like PNEC 2030 and RNC 2050, ensuring the sector meets national and European targets.
This project not only aims to enhance sustainability within the construction sector but also seeks to create synergy between various industries, driving a broader transformation toward a low-carbon economy. Additionally, C2Ø collaborates with ATIC (Technical Association of the Cement Industry) to foster an integrated vision of decarbonization across the value chain.
