Decarbonization Roadmaps for the Metallurgical and Electromechanical Sector
The decarbonization of industry is a global priority, and Portugal is leading this movement with the implementation of the Decarbonization Roadmap for Metallurgical and Electromechanical Companies. This project is part of CarbonFree_Guide4Metal, an initiative promoted by AIMMAP (Association of Metallurgical, Metalworking, and Related Industries of Portugal) and CATIM (Technological Support Center for the Metalworking Industry).
Aligned with the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and the European Green Deal, this initiative aims to support companies in transitioning to carbon neutrality by 2050. But how can businesses benefit from this strategy? Let’s explore!
Available Initiatives and Tools
π Digital Tools for Decarbonization
β
Pegada METAL: A platform already available that allows companies to calculate their carbon footprint in industrial operations.
β
Digital Decarbonization Roadmap: A tool under development to help companies design a personalized plan to reduce emissions.
π Workshops and Specialized Training
In-person and hybrid sessions are being held to train companies on key topics such as:
πΉ Energy efficiency and waste reduction.
πΉ Decarbonization technologies, such as biomass and equipment electrification.
πΉ Circular economy and product life cycle optimization.
These events provide both technical and practical knowledge to help businesses implement sustainable solutions with real impact.
Roadmap Goals: What to Expect?
π Carbon Neutrality: Progressive reduction of COβ emissions, with clear milestones for 2030 and 2050.
π Energy Efficiency: Replacement of outdated equipment with more efficient and sustainable alternatives.
π Circular Economy: Waste recovery and promotion of cleaner production processes.
Sustainable Technologies and Innovation in the Sector
π Use of Renewable Energy: Gradual shift from fossil fuels to solar and wind power.
π₯ Energy Recovery: Implementation of systems to reuse residual heat from industrial processes.
π‘ Digitization and Monitoring: Smart tools to measure and optimize real-time energy consumption.
These solutions not only reduce environmental impact but also enhance the competitiveness of companies in the global market.
Expected Impacts: Benefits for Companies
β
Lower Operating Costs: Energy efficiency and new technologies can lead to significant long-term savings.
β
Increased Competitiveness: Companies aligned with European environmental standards will gain an advantage in the global market.
β
Sustainability: Active contribution to reducing the ecological footprint of the metallurgical and electromechanical sector.
