Roadmap for the Decarbonization of the Agri-Food Sector: A Sustainable Step Toward the Future

The transition to a carbon-neutral economy has already begun in the Portuguese agri-food sector. With the launch of the Roadmap for the Decarbonization of the Agri-Food Sector, the country is taking a decisive step toward sustainability, supporting companies in adopting more efficient, circular, and environmentally friendly practices.
This initiative is led by a consortium composed of PortugalFoods, InovCluster, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Ponta Delgada, and it is aligned with the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and both national and European climate goals.
π Roadmap Objectives
The main purpose is to support Portuguese agri-food companies in defining concrete strategies to reduce their environmental footprint, while also promoting innovation, competitiveness, and resource valorization. Key objectives include:
β
Sector Characterization
Accurately assess energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water and raw material usage to build a solid diagnostic foundation.
β
Adoption of Green Technologies
Identify and recommend energy-efficient technologies and solutions that promote the integration of renewable energy, helping companies reduce both costs and emissions.
β
Sustainable Resource Management
Propose measures to reduce waste and promote the valorization of by-products, guiding the sector toward a βzero wasteβ model and circular economy.
β
Business Training and Support
Promote technical training, awareness, and direct support to companies to facilitate the implementation of structural and operational changes.
π Ongoing Activities
The project is currently conducting technical visits to companies from strategic value chains: meat, dairy, beverages, cereals, fruits, and vegetables. These visits aim to map out existing best practices and identify new opportunities for decarbonization and sustainable innovation.
